Up until now Frictional Games has focused on showing teases of SOMA's story. The setting has been assumed to be in space, given the industrial look of the various rooms and features previously shown. However, with their latest trailer "Lambda", SOMA goes somewhere entirely different than expect. Somewhere gamers already associate with terror. SOMA is going underwater.
I'm referencing BioShock, of course. Just one example of why underwater settings can create outstanding atmosphere for a horror game. Just some quick word association: dark, damp, quiet, claustrophobic, no escape, drowning, mysterious and so on. Obviously the setting in SOMA is no rapture, but they do have one similar train. Obviously something has gone very wrong at this underwater facility. Very, very wrong.
Similar to past trailers, despite it being clear that no human life could exist in the facilities being shown, a human voice rings out -- from a machine. It appears another person has had their awarness put into some sort of robotic body. Worse yet, they don't realize that anything is different. They think they're still alive and human. Despite being a metal box stuck in a room filled with water.
Watch SOMA's "Lambda" trailer and know that Frictional Games is going to terrify everyone with this game. It's not even a question anymore. These guys know how to make us cry in fear.
