Starting immediately Respawn Entertainment has created a new Titanfall beta playlist that prioritizes balanced teams over speedy matchmaking. Up until now Respawn has been very pleased with their behind-the-scenes matchmaking system, and they continue to be pleased, but they've also observed areas where they can improve. One, better matchmaking overall and two, wider diversity in opponent teams played against.
As with anything, sacrifices must be made in exchange for these priorities. Queues may take longer as the matchmaking system searches for opponents that are a "good skill level match". Also, teams may be split apart and opponents will be swapped out, which could extend the time before games start. Here's Respawn's detailed list of the changes in the playlist:
- Searching for teammates and opponents will now sometimes take more time to look for players that are a good skill level match, rather than purely prioritizing speed over quality. This will give us more time to build better teams and create closer games that are worth staying in for a longer period of time.
- Rather than playing against the same opponents over and over, the game will periodically split the teams apart and search for new opponents for each team. This means if one team is dominating, we will update the skill for all of the players and then find each team a better suited match for the next round. Did you lose to a really great team? We'll make them disappear and replace them with a new opposing team - and they will have no idea that you just got your butts kicked. This should end some of the frustration with playing for extended periods when you're having an off night.
For the time being these changes will be limited to the "Improved Matchmaking (Beta)" playlist, which will be found right below the "Play Classic MP" playlist. Depending on the reception the new system receives, as well as Respawn's own internal metrics, the matchmaking system could be extended to other playlists. I'm sure fans of the changes will be fine with the limited scope of it for the time being.
Respawn also notes that they're dedicated to making changes across the board, from balance to matchmaking, as necessary and that nothing is taking priority. They simply saw the opportunity to try something out in matchmaking and put it into beta. Hopefully those weapon balance changes aren't much further down the line... Turn on Titanfall and try out the new playlist right now.
