Not much has been shown of Harmonix's beautiful project, Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved, as of yet. That's probably because unless a Kinect game is shown in just the right way, it can very easily be vilified by an internet more likely to hate the unusual than to embrace it. Yet if there's a reason to embrace the Kinect going forward, it's certainly going to be due to the almost magical Fantasia game Harmonix has pulled directly from their imagination.
Today Harmonix released a trailer they've titled "The Hollow", which is likely the name of the fantastical area the player will in explore in the video. Both "modes" of gameplay that have been shown so far for the game are showcased in the video, the rhythm game-like composer mode and the exploration mode. Hidden in each explorable stage, like The Hollow, players will find multiple different songs which they'll have to complete in the composer mode. In order to access them in the first place, however, players will have to find them first.
Through movement, players will explore and experiment in these vivid, colorful settings. While progression is the material award, the journey and the act of discovery are both core to the experience of Disney Fantasia. I was able to play a bit myself and I smiled the entire time I was playing. While yes, you look quite doofy playing it as evidenced in the video, it's just one of those things that feels amazing while you're actually playing yourself.
Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved is planned for release on Xbox One and Xbox 360 in 2014.
