The PlayStation 4 is already the fastest selling Sony console yet, and the company confirms its next-gen platform has reached a new milestone of 6 million consoles sold since launch in North America and Europe last November. The updated total includes recent PS4 sales from Japan, where the console finally launched last month.
Sony reports Japanese launch weekend sales of 370,000 units, higher than the figures estimated by Famitsu. The official number is still slightly behind Wii U's own launch weekend tally of 371,936 units, and certainly nowhere near the astonishing 630,552 PS2s sold in just two days 14 years ago.
Not that the Wii U has much to gloat about, as the new PS4 worldwide total is well positioned to surpass lifetime sales for Nintendo's console (5.86 million units as of the end of December 2013) in a shorter period of time. To be sure, PS4 sales outside of Japan have slowed since before and just after the holiday rush, so keeping momentum will be no less a concern for Sony.
