Slash Hard to tell. They only slashed *snicker* the price on one of four different ways folk can buy the game. A lot of sites are running with that idea, which I find a bit sensational. Could just be the results of their market research.

The short answer is yes.

The long answer:

In Peace Walker, you capture enemy soldiers and prisoners to add staff Mother Base. Each member has different specialties like recon, medic, cooking, or combat, and you fit them into your base's staff openings accordingly.

Essentially, it let you develop weapons and equipment.

You could also capture vehicles, and use them (along with your soldiers) in a sort of turn-based thing called outer-ops. You couldn't control your squads, but you'd send them out to take on other squads of soldiers and vehicles and, if they won, you'd get stuff like ammo, rations, and sometimes rare weapons.

You could play as soldiers in certain missions too, which was actually useful. I had quite a few with better stats than Snake, and they helped out immensely when I was S ranking missions.

You could even capture Mr. Kojima himself, by the way. (He just looked like a normal soldier when you played as him though...)

I'm hoping and thinking that The Phantom Pain will greatly improve upon the whole concept of Mother Base. Maybe even turn outer-ops into a full-on RTS or let us control our soldiers/vehicles like we normally control Snake.

Anyway, I'm excited. I didn't mind paying $40, but a price drop is never a bad thing. I just wish they'd announce a special version for NA. Japan has like fifty special editions.

Thanks Drogo Baggins. I never played Peace Walker, figured it would be considered out of canon, but maybe I should check it out.

Peace Walker was great for me. I spent around 150 hours on it, very little of which was spent on multiplayer/co-op, and I only walked away because I got sort of caught up in trophy hunting through the franchise (and now DMC!). I really can't wait to come back to it in the build up for GZ.

Most folks complain about the controls, but I don't think they realize there's an MGS4 control scheme option. It's not near the actual depth of MGS4's controls, but the basics are there.

And you can only lay down, not crawl, which was a huge deal for some people. While it's an odd design choice (akin to two dodge buttons but no lock-on in DmC), I honestly never missed it. It just never seemed necessary in PW.

As far as canon is concerned, it's an important story if the Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain trailers are anything to go by. There's always the possibility that they'll have a recap or something and I'm sure the game will still be enjoyable to those who missed out on PW, but PW is certainly canon, and definitely has a lot to do with GZ/TPP.

If you just wanna get the story in your head, you could watch this.. Or, if you don't wanna spend 3 hours looking at comic book cutscenes, you could of course just read a synopsis.

You could also probably just forget the whole thing and enjoy MGSV regardless.

EDIT: What the hell!? It keeps changing my post. There's supposed to be a link to a YT video with all PW cutscenes, another paragraph, and some frowny faces.

EDIT 2: Alright got the link to work. Frowny faces conveyed too much sad for the internet to handle so I omitted them.

For people in the UK intending to buy Ground Zeroes on PS3, it's only £22 on Amazon.co.uk Pre-ordered it myself last night. Not owning a PS4 yet, Ground Zeroes and the HD re-release of Final Fantasy X are the only thing that grab my attention in the near future!

I second Drogo Baggins on this! Peace Walker was most definitely cannon, Kojima worked on it purposefully as the sequel to Snake Eater. Unlike Portable Ops which was mainly developed as a portable companion to Snake Eater, not to detract from how good PO was!

No it's that other PSP game that is sort of iffy on the canon.

Yeah Peace Walker is bona fide metal gear. PO was too but was less known or recieved by fans. Why play PO when MGS3 was still in its infancy. Whereas PW directly sets up the next two games playing them without play the former would be a disservice.
