Thou art Risen! Again! For the third time really! Introducing Risen 3: Titan Lords, from the developers of the Gothic trilogy and the Risen series up to this point, Piranha Bytes. With Risen 3, Piranha Bytes says they're going back to their RPG origins, which I suppose means they're focusing on the fundamentals of the experience rather than complicated features and new mechanics. Expect Risen 3: Titan Lords to launch in August later this year for the PC and suspiciously ambiguous "consoles," though Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are confirmed.
Piranha Bites' Project Lead Bjoern Pankratz insists he's not making some IKEA-quality video game:
"Like a carpenter with a hand-crafted piece of furniture, we put together the story, the characters and the landscape – making it all fit together so that the player has the possibility to discover an entire universe. Exploration is the key to our game"
Unfortunately Risen 2 wasn't particularly well received, especially on its console versions where it dropped an extra point or two in critical reviews. Say what you will about the game itself, but it seems to me that the 360 and PS3 just weren't able to scale well enough for the big third-person RPG. Hopefully Piranha Bytes is able to jump to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which are not more powerful but also much easier to port PC titles to.
Expect more information on Risen 3: Titan Lords in the months ahead. August 2014 isn't too far in the scheme of things, so they'll probably start ramping up a bit of online marketing before too long. For now, at least we can say these few screenshots show some promise.
