Independent studio Abbey Games can't wait to release their next game after the very warm reception of their first title, Reus. Today Abbey's decided to reveal that next project as Renowned Explorers - International Society. Taking inspiration from titles like X-COM: Enemy Unknown and Fire Emblem, Renowned Explorers wants to mix the sense of adventure and exploration of Jules Verne with the depth and complexity of modern tactical games.
Progress in the game is as follows, according to the initial release detailing the game's basic mechanics.
- "... gather a crew of skilled explorers, banding together people with different personalities and skills."
- "... follow the most promising leads around the world, while managing time and resources efficiently."
- "When you have determined the location of a treasure, it’s time for a turn-based approach. As a Captain you will lead your crew members to explore newfound land with the help of any resources that you may find on the island. Any foes that the exotic place has to offer can be met with either ruthless combat, pleasant conversation or an interesting mix of the two."
- "After facing the challenges of a Caribbean island, Mayan temple or deep-jungle shrine, you may claim the treasure as your own and return it to your museum."
Rather than a single, long campaign like Fire Emblem or X-COM however, it seems Renowned Explorers is aiming for an extent of replayability with dynamically created content. Each game a player starts begins with a freshly created world, full of completely different characters to meet, adventure and hopefully plenty of treasure.
With each game of Renowned Explorers - International Society players will get closer to mastering the art of exploration and adventure -- hopefully. Abbey Games will have more information on their new game in the months to come. Let's hope it's as unique and enjoyable as Reus was. Abbey's certainly proven they've got the salt to make solid games. Let's keep the ball rolling (Indian Jones reference, get it?).
