You forgot to mention how you'll die a lot Lydia.

Madness? This is not madness... THIS IS DRAGLAKE!

okay I'm done.

Also did he just buff his axe with a fire resin? Against a dragon?

I tried my hardest to like Dark Souls 1, but in my opinion a game where you die as frequently as you do is just not interesting for me.

Also that was a drake not a dragon. Still though fire shouldn't be effextive

The beginning of the game puts a lot of people off but you get better with time and don't die as frequently. Hell I died more times playing God of War on the hardest difficulty than I did in Dark Souls. People like to exaggerate the difficulty in Dark Souls. If you're gonna ignore it just because of that then you're really missing out on an amazing experience.

I'm not going to give the game time if I find it innately boring, games should be challenging, but this just frustrated me to the point of not caring what the rest of the game was like. Re-doing the same annoying part 20 times over just to get stuck on to another part that takes another 20 tries, isn't my idea of fun.

I never got frustrated because I never felt like the game was being unfair. Whenever I lost I knew that the reason behind it was that I simply wasn't good enough.

If it takes you 20 tries to get through a single problem then perhaps you should pay more attention. It's not about attrition, it's about learning.

I exaggerate the amount of tries. I'm a Software Engineer by profession, I problem solve day in day out so it's not my lack of learning or "paying attention" like you think. I just didn't like the game, end of.

It typically is the issue though. People just aren't used to games with slower, more deliberate pacing these days.

I understand where you're coming from, but I assure you that wasn't the case. I play a lot of strategy games, more recently XCOM and Blackguards, which at times will have you pulling your hair out in frustration, but I found these have paced and balanced it well enough that you learn from your losses without getting overly frustrated at the time it takes. At least for me anyway.

Well DarkSouls is setup like that to.
I go though DarkSouls offline all the time & it's setup where everything is intimating & to get you frustrated, but always has a solution to it.
It's suppose to challenge you every step & keep you on your toes & force you to think, be patient & not rush into situations blindly.

I understand what you're saying & to me at 1st it was like Demon'sSouls was fighting against me with every turn.
I try this armor, weapon, shield, it didn't work.
I level this attribute up, it didn't work.
It was like i was grinding for no reason.

But when you start learning the flow then things get easy.
After Demon'sSouls, DarkSouls was easier....somewhat.

I just explained that I'm used to repetition, challenging games and learning from mistakes, but Dark Souls for me turns an interesting learning experience in to a frustrating grind. I love challenging games, it's not fun if it's too easy, but in my opinion they tipped the balance of challenging / annoying.

I only beat the game so I could beat it before someone else I knew beat it before me. Otherwise, I thought that at best, it was an average game. Good fighting mechanics, beautiful level design, but then that ever present slow pace.

The bosses would often lose their charm after the first 3 tries.

But then again, one of the most intense things I've experienced in video games in general is the invasions. Dudes up and messing up your world and coming to kill you. It was pretty intense to experience that after the monotony. (Then lag ruins it shortly after when you get backstabbed by a guy several yards away)
