Monolith Soft's X was rumored to be shown during yesterday's Nintendo Direct, but no one was really sure what to expect. Imagine the look on our faces when not only did X show up, but the combat system was showcased showing off a full fight featuring a ton of complicated gameplay mechanics. Sadly, when the gameplay ended, Nintendo President Iwata did not share a release window for the game. That could very well imply a 2015 launch.
In the gameplay video we see a player with what looks to be three AI-controlle party members begin fighting a small monkey creature. The party consists of a girl with a giant shield, a ranged gun shooter, and the player who switches between a sword and a large mini-gun. The fight's rather uneventful, with a few quick time button preses, until the player jumps in a gundam-esque mech suit. The tiny gorilla then dies very quickly.
The next phase of the fight involves a much larger foe, an even bigger gorilla! Here, in their gundam things, all the characters fire from range. When the gorilla suddenly attacks the player he performs a quick-time event buntton press ("Huge Succeeded!") and doesn't appear to be otherwise affected. Towards the end of the fight the player steps out of the gundam and fights the giant boss on foot, perhaps to prove that he can. He unfortunately does little damage this way and his party members finish it off.
Apparently X's battle system is based on the one from Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii, but with "extra polish." Unfortunately there were no further details regarding the Wii U exclusive's release date or when we'll hear more information. Odds are this game will be coming to Japan before it's localized to the west. Sigh, oh well.
