Introducing Sonic the Hedgehog, perhaps you've heard of him before? Sonic and his pals have had a makeover as Sega's taken the franchise back to the drawing board. This is Sonic Boom: a television show, a toy line, and a brand new game for Wii U and 3DS. Sonic Boom won't sway too much from the Sonic the Hedgehog we've known in the past, but it is the start of a new era for Sonic -- for better or worse.
Sonic Boom will be the third game Sega is contractually obligated to create for Nintendo, but oddly enough Sega won't be developing it. Instead development is being handed off to Big Red Button Entertainment for the Wii U, which will be the company's first complete game project since its formation in 2008. Sanzaru Games, developers of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, will handle the 3DS version. Generally speaking they should be be the same game only optimized for the different platforms.
As for what the game actually is, well, that's another matter entirely. Sonic Boom will serve as a prequel story for still-in-production cartoon. Yes, spoilers, it appears Dr. Eggman gets away and Sonic continues to fight him forever onward. Each of the four main protagonists will feature mechanics unique to themselves like Tail's floating, Sonic's speed and Knuckles' newfound buffness. Otherwise, much of the third-person action should seem familiar to players of recent Sonic titles.
Sonic Boom currently has no announced launch window, though the cartoon is planned to run between 2014 and 2015 so with the game being a prequel I'd expect it later this year. That's for both Wii U and 3DS. No matter what you may think of the, erm, reboot, especially Knuckles dedication to the gym, I think we can all agree on one thing: Sonic's new scarf is pretty hip.
