Tecmo koei tends to offer the japanese voice overs for free when presented as DLC, which had always made me pretty happy they'd be nice enough to do that.

I just never thought that someone would charge for it even as a pre-order, just makes me realise how nice it is for tecmo koei to do that.

I'm sure there's a monetary reason as to why, just an eye opener.

rpg Tecmo Koei definitely deserve props for that.

Here's the deal with how this sort of thing started. Voice tracks are actually pretty huge, especially for big action games or RPGs -- the sort of stuff that gets localized from Japan, right? So, rather than putting a lot of effort into stuffing the audio on-disc using compression that ruins audio quality they make it digital.

The problem is that on consoles, specifically the Xbox 360 though I believe the PS3 is also guilty in this case, charge publishers for every piece of DLC downloaded. Thus, if Square Enix wanted to give out the DLC for free, they'd have to pay Microsoft for every download. Naturally, big publishers like Square aren't willing to do this just for a niche group who likes their Japanese voice tracks.

On PC it wouldn't make a difference, since Steam lets everyone download everything for free, without surcharges or taxes. On console, it's just a mix of everyone wanting to be paid for everything.

what i cant understand is, why do people even care about JAP voices, i pretty much garuntee they cant understand a freaking word of it, so why does it matter, its not like the english voices will kill them.

Aaron32 - It's as you can see in hype for the upcoming Tales of Symphonia Chronicles. Dual audio is just cool. Maybe this doesn't apply so much in your day-to-day RPGs, such as Skyrim, but this feature is something fans kill for in JRPGs.

From what I hear they want the original audio, because thats the way it was intended to be. I wouldn't know how many of them can actually understand Japanese, but when the question comes up I've never heard people claim they can either, just the reason I just gave.

I can see where they're coming from when it comes to enjoying music, you don't need to understand a language to enjoy it, but story is a another matter.

but that still avoids WHY they care so much, music yes, but voices? no, most of them CANT understand a word, so why complain, it makes no sense.

and Zombie, you get what i mean, for an RPG JAP or not, you NEED to understand the words for the story, and im sorry but the "subtitles" arguement is dumb, it changes nothing, you cant tell me that HEARING japanese voices makes the game better.

That does make sense but Japanese, unlike English, is a very tonal and inflection based language so the tone of the voice carries a lot of weight that does come across the language barrier. There's also a lot of english voice directors that just tell the actors "try to sound like the japanese track" which is lazy and results in crap acting since you can't make one language tone in the same way as another.

That said, by and large Japanese voicing is soap opera tier over-acting.

I think most of them were in Nier... pretty sure I heard Laura Bailey and Liam O'Brien in there.

seeing lots of names i know and enjoy hearing, Troy Baker, Liam O'Brien and Laura Bailey (all three are in the FF XIII storyline)

they can do great english voice acting, Liam O'Brien is incrdible as Caius in FF XIII-2 as is Ali Hillis as Lightning and Troy Baker as Snow.

the vast problem is the majority of US/EU game companies make it sound like they are recording it while they're still rehearsing their lines.
