As part of Nintendo's business briefing today in Japan President Satoru Iwata had a bit of extra news to feed to gaming reporters. The highly anticipated Wii U game, one of the rare few announced and mid-development, Mario Kart 8 has had its release window tightened. We can expect Mario latest racing game to be put out in May later this year. Not exactly the "Spring" many of us were hoping for, but at least it's not the holiday season.
Yes, tecnhically this release window update serves as a delay, but with Nintendo's recent Wii U woes it's probably better than expected. After all, all of Nintendo's planned releases for spring 2013 ended up being pushed to later in the year too. That's Game & Wario, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Wii Fit U and more. Not surprisingly, all of those games ended up having little impact on Wii U sales. Hopefully Mario Kart 8 will prove stronger.
Iwata also wanted to ensure listeners that Mario Kart 8 wouldn't just be another Wii U "momentum builder," perhaps implying that's what several other Wii U releases were. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World were very nice looking games, but perhaps not the robust offerings fans expect from Nintendo. A legitimate full release that will define the Wii U is exactly what the platform needs. Hopefully Iwata is implying that's what Mario Kart 8 will be.
Mario Kart 8 is coming to the Wii U in May. Nintendo's betting on it being one of if not the Wii U game to buy.
