Salute, my fellow MMO players. Tonight we pour one out for four MMOs that are not long for this world. Today, Sony Online Entertainment announced four planned MMO closures in 2014. On March 31 both Free Realms and Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures will die. Then on July 31 both Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and Wizardry Online will follow them into the night. Let them recall their time in the sun.
I remember playing in the beta of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes myself and wondering whether it would even manage to launch a full game. Sometimes closures are just a necessary part of the MMO life-cycle. Certainly each of these MMOs have existing communities within them who will be saddened and disappointed with the news, but hopefully they'll be able to move on and bring their experiences to new communities, like I did after my experienced with the Vanguard beta.
Perhaps it's a good reminder to think of the Sony Online Entertainment games that will live on despite the looming closures of these four MMOs. Games like Everquest, Everquest II, and the upcoming Everquest Next. See, doesn't the future look brighter already?
