People are becoming more and more connected to each other over the Internet with new technology every day. This is especially true in gaming. Gone are the days of Super Mario Kart and the original Super Smash Bros where you invited your friends over to your house for some multiplayer fun. After all, who needs to go across town when you can play and chat together on PSN or Xbox Live from the comfort of your own man cave?
Unfortunately, group chat comes at a price for Playstation 4 users. Reddit user nyteryder79 found that out the hard way when their console was corrupted and required a complete reinitialization of the system. It started off as innocuous as just not being able to do anything with the group message but quickly spread to affecting all their messages. After that, nyteryder79 said that:
"After about an hour of gaming, my PS4 switched to a blue screen and started to rebuild the database, which took about an hour. When it was finished, it said my database was corrupt.
So, I turned the PS4 off, booted into safe mode and attempted to rebuild the database. It said it finished, so I booted the console back up, but all my messages were still screwed."
A call to Sony's support hotline walked him through reinitializing the PS4, which solved the problem for a couple of days until it happened again. A second call got him a different representative from Sony that acknowledged this is a PSN bug and filed a ticket. If you happen to be affected by this bug, the troubleshooting steps are as follows:
- Boot into safe mode by turning off your system, then holding down the power button for seven seconds. You should hear two beeps: one when you first push the power button and a second after seven seconds. Connect your controller with the USB cable and press the PS button. You should see a screen that looks like this if you did it correctly:
- Once in safe mode, choose option 5: Rebuild Database. Note that this could take an hour or more.
- Install the Playstation app on a mobile device and attempt to delete your messages.
- Clear the messages from your PS4 or PS3, if possible.
If that doesn't work, boot into safe mode again and select the final option: Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software). This will wipe everything on your system, including the operating system. A message will pop up warning you that you need a USB storage device with the PS4 software on it connected before you can continue. The software will be downloaded as part of the process, so you don't have to worry about not finding it somewhere online.
If you find yourself a victim of corrupted group chats, call Sony's customer support line to report it, especially if these steps didn't work for you. The more people that report having the same issue, the more information PSN engineers have to work with and the sooner they can get this annoying bug fixed.
