When you have a cult following like Star Wars, fans are always on the hunt for new information about anything related to the franchise, whether it be games, movies, books, or even action figures or other toys (come on, everyone knows you always wanted a lightsaber). Whenever the trademark for Star Wars 1313 was filed by LucasArts back in 2012, the story spread like wildfire. As time went on and details started trickling out, fans became more excited. When rumors started that it might have been a prequel to Battlefront III, we got even giddier. When LucasArts closed last year, however, hopes were dashed.
We showed some concept art of what could have been, which only served to open old wounds. Unfortunately the sadness continues. Disney has chosen not to renew the trademark for Star Wars 1313. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office lists 1313 as:
"Abandoned because no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued."
This hurts. A lot. Luckily, EA has teased a new Battlefront sequel that's currently scheduled to be released some time in 2015. Unfortunately, it's little consolation for those of us that were really hoping 1313 would be a reality. On the other hand, we have Master Yoda's comforting words to Anakin Skywalker to remember:
"Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force. Mourn them do not. Miss them do not. Attachment leads to jealousy. The shadow of greed that is."
