Wasn't Magma Chamber announced like a year or two ago and never came to fruition? Then instead they released Dominion.

DarkLordAkuma That was the previous iteration of the Magma Chamber, yes. It was another 5v5 map with portals and some other fancy features. They never officially canceled that one, but we can assume it's dead too.

Haha Magma Chamber died a long time ago. I remember the hype the first time round, everyone on LoL was moaning about getting bored of one map. Not played LoL in a while, switched to DOTA 2 a few months back.

They had mentioned somewhere in S3 that the old magma chamber became the new one, effectively cancelling the 5v5 variant by morphing it into the arena. Also they were very adamant about not making a "Summoner's Rift Competitor", and that the idea of another 5v5 map was exactly that. Turned into one of those "comparing LoL to sports/chess" discussions.

So the 5v5 variant is dead, officially as it will ever be dead.

On to the new, honestly not sad it's gone. We lose nothing over it anyway as the concepts it was built off, and what Showdown attempted to accomplish, aren't cancelled anyway.

Magma Chamber is a skin for mid-lane w/ slight changes and health packs, nothing more, nothing less. Within their explanation Riot did give some insight as to why it's been retired. The amount of people who played Showdown is pitiful (accounted for a tenth of what One for All had managed), while there's certainly some who like it, it had it's share of problems, and Riot was hoovering in feedback the entire time. There were large calls for ladders, shorter champ select, and for it to be set up how SR lanes set themselves up. These are all valid pieces of feedback, but also quite a bit of legwork, so if they hit the backburner, you know why, the mode was not popular anyway.

That highlights the core issue with Magma Chamber, one of the three pieces of feedback Riot Brakhar noted was that players expressed a desire to run on SR lanes. This is something Riot's actually playing with as an idea, they like it. There's an idea floating with them that Showdown's return will have queues for specific SR lanes; "That way people who really do want to see who is the best mid-laner can, and no one will be able to use the excuse that they lost because of the health packs or brush differences". This ultimately makes Magma Chamber redundant as it's basically midlane anyway. It has minor differences, enough where you can't translate it directly into skill on SR, and I believe that is a valid complaint for it.

So, why's Magma Chamber shelved? Redundant. People want SR lanes for the competition, Riot has better things to do than make Magma Chamber into pure reskins. I would much rather it's art direction be used for something actually new and cool sometime down the line anyway, rather than just get wasted as a reskin.
