Hmm is all the Chinese and romance of the three kingdoms skins they do related to being owned by a Chinese company?

BlackScythe Well, considering Tencent got involved back in 2011, it's fairly unlikely. While the company does have a major stake in Riot's success, they don't actually own or run Riot Games. A few points however:
  • Lunar New Year is a Chinese/Asian holiday to begin with.
  • Warring Kingdoms rock.
  • Okay seriously, though. I've little doubt these skins go toward helping Riot gain a bigger foothold in China over Dota 2 or any other possible competitors. Speaking to some mainland players, I was told that the country's MOBA fans are mostly still playing DotA (the first one), and have not made the Dota 2 jump because it doesn't have the same appeal to them. This presents an opportunity for Riot to take over as the country's leading MOBA game. Skins like these no doubt help with their appeal to China and other Asian countries.

China's pro lol scene is weird. People are interested in it kinda, we mostly all know of Tabe, Uzi, we all remember TPA. But they don't run english commentary or have really solid stuff for english speakers to watch, so it's really awkward to try and get involved in and show support for.

Also, they don't use the Tournament Realm from what I've seen, which is really weird and funny to watch.

I'm well aware I own a version of the story written by Luo Guanzhong.

I just notice that Riot seems to have a particular slant towards Chinese historical elements in a lot of their costumes that is somewhat rare in American games. Typically if someone makes anything Asian themed they go with Samurai or Ninja.

Ninjas started in China. :33333

Also, the Chinese designs are probably just obvious with some of the fighting styles, I guess. Easy way to please a lot of people (i.e. sell a ton of skins).

Of course it is lol. Not to mention they have a compelling interesting to pander to the growing Chinese market, for several reasons other than being owned by Tencent:

1) Massive consumer base that is all growing into the middle-class, perfect for a F2P game
2) No compeition from console games since those are banned in China
3) To erode the consumer base of LoL's largest rival in the market, DotA:Allstars/DotA2, whom likewise has a massive Chinese playerbase.

I always forget volibear still exists, he's so rare. Maybe we'll see a skin once riot looks into his balance?

I actually quite like his skins. Although, they do have to make skins that will sell well around these times of the year, and I can't quite see a Chinese Volibear skin selling nearly as well as a Chinese Riven skin.
