Local multiplayer is back. This is one indie trend that almost all gamers can support, though waiting for friends to come over to play is quite painful. The games though, the games are just so cool. One of those games, perhaps one of the best of them, is Nidhogg. Nidhogg is a 2D sword-fighting game that's obviously much more complicated than first meets the eye. It also now has a PC release date -- January 13.
In addition to the release date, the announcement trailer has also confirmed two more additions to the game. First, a full single-player campaign where the player sword-fights his way through castle and clouds, through a variety of terrain and ultimately fighting what looks like a giant flying worm/unicorn. Also, tournament mode! If you've got 8 players instead of just two then set up a tournament. Reminds me of the Super Smash Bros. tournament mode.
Nidhogg isn't going to be for everyone. Not all of us have a friends that can come over for some couch multiplayer, let alone a setup where they can do it with a PC game. If that's a type of game you're interested in, however, then Nidhogg is one of the best. It's right up there with Towerfall and Samurai Gunn in terms of must-have local multiplayer games.
