There's just something about Kirby. His game's aren't often challenging, or mechanically impressive, but despite that Kirby somehow manages to make each and every title he stars in magical. Such is also the case with the upcoming 3DS release Kirby Triple Deluxe (Kirby 3D, dohoho). Nintendo Japan has releases a new trailer for the game and once again, while not impressed with the gameplay, it's impossible not to crack a smile while watching.
Gameplay is simple, Kirby walks forward, jumps, does some basic platforming and swallows enemies, thereby stealing their powers. Even those powers aren't necessarily complicated however. They all boil down to the same combat mechanics, despite there being what I believe to be 20 different powers in the game. Swinging a sword or juggling look different, but it's just damage to enemies in the end.
Yet it's so much more than just the mechanics and gameplay. It's the simple fact that Kirby, living in this dreamscape of a world, can juggle, he can turn into Link and swing a sword, and he can devour near everything in front of him with a single inhale. He does all of this and more with the goofiest smile on his face. Also, he's a giant puffy pink ball.
I'm not sure if the cuteness of Kirby's Epic Yarn can ever be met again, but that shouldn't stop Kirby Triple Deluxe from embracing and reveling in the magic that is inherent to the franchise. HE'S SO CUTE.
