Mario Kart 8 is Nintendo's next huge released on the Wii U and so it deservedly received the showcase spot at the end of today's Nintendo Direct for December. While there weren't any huge reveals, like the game's release date is still a broad spring 2014 window, there were some new smaller details. For instance, Rosalina and several "Baby" Nintendo characters will be playable, and a few new maps like the Airport have been shown. This game is so good.
Yus, that's right, Rosalina is now a driver in Mario Kart 8. While she isn't shown in the screenshots we have, or even the trailer I guess (wait, she's in there on a kick-ass bike), she was teased in the new Super Smash Bros. trailer as well as confirmed in the press release. Baby characters include Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach and Baby Daisy, though I'm sure there are many more hiding in their freakish crib-karts or whatever they're called.
Other additions include an all new airport map, the desert and high in the clouds. Was the candy kingdom map already shown? I can't remember. Also, we see a bunch of new vehicles in action like UFOs, four-wheel ATVbugges and of course the normal karts and bikes from previous games in the series. Someone wreck Peach's huge limo-kart or whatever it is already. And the baby crib-karts too. Creepy.
Mario Kart 8 is still planned for release in spring 2014 and we're crossing our fingers that it's not delayed. Considering Nintendo has yet to announce practically any big fall releases for the Wii U as of yet, however, we're worried. It's in Nintendo's nature to delay spring releases so they can stack their holiday season -- though that certainly didn't appear to work this year.
