Have you played Killer Instinct on the Xbox One? Remember your first win? Remember your latest? Well after a recent revelation was made by Youtubing Killer Instinct players, the veracity of all wins may be under scrutiny. It appears that desyncing issues may be causing players matched against each other to view two different versions of the same game -- each coming to their own, different conclusions.
After Youtuber Calvin Morrow was matched against a player he was familiar with online, Darksydephil, he checked in with him later to discuss the match. It turned out the two of them had entirely different experiences. One of them saw themselves win the match, one of them had the match end in an abrupt disconnection. It also turned out that both of them recorded the match.
Comparing the two matches showed how both players saw two completely different games. Due to small amounts of lag, where one player would land a hit the other would see a block. This resulted in a desync where each game would continue running with completely different results. Control inputs would still be registered, but the consequences of each action would be entirely different.
One player won, one player desynced when the match ended in the other player's version of the game -- no loss. The result isn't just a confusing single game, but the start of a question: can the results of any Killer Instinct match be trusted from here on? The question of whether there is an issue with net code syncing has been answered. The next is how pervasive the issue is. Killer Instinct has a very, very serious problem.
