Starbound's beta is here. I'll be honest and say I haven't been following the game's development with a fine-toothed comb or anything. I know the basic premise is Terraria in space. I know that this first beta stage includes multiplayer, but is also likely to be quite buggy. That means unless you're ready and willing to beta test the game it might be best to wait a bit. I also know that it looks amazing.
Chucklefish describes their game as, "an extraterrestrial sandbox adventure game." To me there's multiple meanings there. The first is directly implied, that is that you are an alien. The second is less so, in that everything you discover in the game will be alien. It's a game of discovery and that more than anything is what makes the game appealing to me.
With hundreds of materials and thousands of in-game objects, Starbound is going well beyond the path laid out before it by Terraria. Players can either construct their very own city or take off into space to claim resources or visit settlements. In space they'll encounter quests and other challenges, on top of who knows what else, which is guaranteed to keep things interesting.
Starbound's beta is available today. If you're interested in trying it out either head to the Starbound store or go into Steam and pick the game up for $15, which includes beta access
