Microsoft's "Games With Gold" is hardly a disappointment. It's hard to be disappointed in free games. Still, when compared to rival Sony's PlayStation Plus service it's clear how much better "Games With Gold" could be. Perhaps the biggest step would be bringing the service to Xbox One, much like Sony with the PlayStation 4. Unfortunately that won't be happening. However, while the service won't be there day one, it will be coming soon.
According to a tweet from Microsoft's Xbox social media guru Major Nelson "Games With Gold" won't arrive in 2013, but it is coming. He goes on to say that more information will be available, "coming later in 2014." Oof, that's one bag of worms in a single sentence. It could mean in 2014, or it could mean late 2014. Social Media/Marketing folk don't usually stumble on this sort of language, so odds are it's the worse option.
Obviously, with preorders for both next-gen consoles being sold out at least in North America, the inclusion of "Games With Gold" isn't stopping anyone from buying the console right now. It probably won't stop any for the next few months either. Still, every month, when Sony rolls out the PlayStation Plus details coming up, fans will point at Microsoft and say, "What's the deal, yo?" Over time, well, it adds up.
Free games, whenever they get here, are a great deal. Odds are Microsoft just needs to get enough downloadable titles in their library to start offering them for free. A situation Sony doesn't seem to have a problem with with all of their indie outreach.
Great news: Access to free games each month is coming for Xbox Live Gold members on #XboxOne – Details coming later in 2014— Larry Hryb (@majornelson) November 14, 2013
