Fantastic 2D fighter. If you like Guilty Gear or Darkstalkers (or even Melty Blood) you'll probably really enjoy the characters and mechanics.

IchAkasi pretty much covered it. Generally with fighting games, there's Street Figher, Marvel vs Capcom, Mortal Kombat (which has lost it's competitive scene as far as I know), then there are what I like to call "Japanese Fighting Games."

Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, and Darkstalkers are the first three to come to mind when I think of Jap fighters, in that order.

Street Fighter and MvC are Japanese games.
They all come from Japan, but they aren't categorized the same way generally:

Street Fighter is a very static fighting game, where instead of going for long, fast-paced combos, you instead try to lead into your ultra attack by beating your opponent with mind games.

Marvel VS Capcom is the opposite. Your goal is to combo the living shit out of your opponent as fast as possible. Also, this game plays heavily on the three verses three mechanic, where you can switch in other characters and call in assists.

"Japanese Fighting Games" all have different playstyles, but they don't feel foreign from each other. Street Fighter players could feel lost playing Marvel VS Capcom, and vice versa. However, Darkstalkers players (like myself) have no troubles converting to BlazBlue.

It's the different mechanics. JP fighters, not that they all aren't natively, are heavy heavy-low, light, light-low, where as Street Fighter and Marvel are non-traditional with their inputs. At least the newer installments.

That soundtrack CD. Good lord, is the rest of the world ready for Blazblue tunes all the time?

I hope the two North American exclusives are people to play it with. Vita Extend hasn't given me any pals to face off against, DedValve.
