If you're a big strategy game fan then you've likely played titles like Civilization IV, Civilization V or any of the Galactic Civilization titles. If that's the case then you'll be excited to hear about the formation of Mohawk Games. Mohawk has only just been formed by Civilization IV's Lead Designer Soren Johnson along with co-founders Dorian Newcomb, Art Director of Civilization V, and Brad Wardell, designer of the Galactic Civilization series. We are unworthy.
Soren provided the following statement along with the studio's announcement:
"Mohawk puts gameplay first. Our goal is to make games that will be played for years, based on elegant, replayable systems that are not limited by finite content creation. Our development process emphasizes rapid iteration above all else, requiring our games to be playable as soon as possible so that we have time to find the fun."
For the time being Mohawk Games will be run as an independent studio backed by funding out of the Stardock Strategic Investment Fund. The fund was only recently announced with the formation of another Stardock seedling studio, Oxide Games. Both Oxide and Mohawk will be developing on Oxide's new 64-bit engine named Nitrous. The two teams, both largely formed of former Civilization V developers, form an exciting tag-team of strategy development.
Mohawk's first game is codenamed Mars and has already begun development. Expect, "ongoing community involvement, early access programs, and extensive mod support," for Mars over the next years of development.
Bring it on, Mohawk! We'll be impatiently waiting.
