Figuring out exactly how Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and its prologue, Ground Zeroes, fit together is likely intentionally a huge pain. Today, however, we're in luck, as Konami has released the first official details on each game's release which are complicated in their own right. Here are the basics: Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will launch spring 2014 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while The Phantom Pain will come... later.
Hideo Kojima, Creator of the Metal Gear Solid series and head of Kojima Productions, details on the thought process behind The Phantom Pain and its prologue:
"The advanced capabilities of the FOX Engine are allowing me to express the story of METAL GEAR SOLID in a new way. There will be a significant difference in what METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN brings to the series, so we want to ease players into the new open world environment and its potential, allowing them to fully benefit from all that the new game offers. As such, METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES has been designed to introduce key elements, while setting up the events of METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN."
Ground Zeroes, using Kojima Productions' very own Fox Engine, will feature day and night cycles, weather conditions as well as just intrinsically different gameplay compared to previous Metal Gear titles. While the experience is designed to "introduce" players into the new type of game that The Phantom Pain will become, expect a complete game -- nothing less.
It appears that with Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes we'll also see our first pricing difference between current gen and next-gen titles. Hang on, because this is confusing. According to the press-release, Ground Zeroes will be available in retail on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 -- current gen systems -- for $29.99. No next-gen retail, apparently. Digitally, however, Ground Zeroes will come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for $29.99, while also coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 for $19.99. Yes, current-gen will be cheaper than next-gen for the digital release of the game.
Expect Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes to be release next spring on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain currently has no release date, but it will also be coming to current and next-gen platforms.
