People Can Fly, the studio most well-known for the Painkiller series, Bulletstorm and most recently Gears of War: Judgment, has undergone a transformation. Going forward the studio will now be known as Epic Games Poland. This can either be considered a positive, as Epic further welcomes the studio into the fold, or a negative considering the studio is losing its identity. Either way, this is simply how things are now.
An Epic Games representative provided the following statement to Pixel Enemy:
"We’ve changed the studio’s name from People Can Fly to Epic Games Poland. We’re a global company with talented people working toward one goal across the world. We think this helps better reflect that."
In their response, Epic Games also confirmed that Epic Games Poland is one of the many studios working on the PC title Fortnite. Just what Fortnite has become since we last saw the game is a mystery, but if it's become so large as to require multiple studios including Epic Games Poland, well, dang. That's a big game.
Or perhaps we're looking at this wrong. Perhaps after Gears of War: Judgment, which wasn't nearly as successful as I'm sure Epic would have liked, caused the studio to shrink dramatically. That would explain the studio's renaming, as well as its repositioning as a side-developer of a larger project.
Whatever the case may be, overall this is a rather surprising move by Epic. Hopefully whatever studio name Epic Games Poland may be on the sign outside the office, they'll always retain the dream that people can fly.
