Halo: Spartan Assault, the little Windows 8 exclusive that couldn't, is finally coming to other platforms. Microsoft announced today that the top-down twin stick shooter will be coming to both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One in December. That's either because it sold well beyond expectations and so Microsoft can now easily justify spending the money on ports, or... wait, what game are we talking about? Oh! Halo: Spartan Assault! Wow, yeah, whatever happened to that game?
It wouldn't be surprising if everyone had forgotten what Halo: Spartan Assault was all about, considering how ridiculously exclusionary its initial release was. From the demo I was able to play I can certainly vouch for the game's quality, at least. Plus it sounds like the game will be receiving some upgrades as it comes to console, too! Despite my sardonic attitude related to the game's initial release, I think it's probably well worth checking out on console.
Microsoft provided some bullet-point features that will be added to the upcoming releases:
- Play longer than ever in a new online Co-op mode, and watch each other's backs with all-new Co-op missions
- Engage in Operation Hydra, the expansion from the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 game that brings mystery and a chilling addition to the single player Campaign
- Wage war against a persistent and overwhelming enemy – encounter the Flood for the first time in Halo: Spartan Assault
- Go in strong with an expanded arsenal that brings you more weapons, more armor abilities, and more upgrades – it's the ultimate Spartan Assault experience!
It's great to hear that Vanguard and 343 will be adding an online co-op mode to the game, as that's exactly the sort of experience I'd want from Halo: Spartan Assault, plus it's a nice touch that they'll include Operation Hydra. Altogether, not much to complain about! Well, beyond the fact that it took so long to get this far. Heck, it still isn't announced for general PC... and maybe never will.
Halo: Spartan Assault, the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 exclusive, will now be coming to Xbox One and Xbox 360 this December.
