Ready at Dawn's PlayStation 4 exlusive The Order: 1886 made waves when it debuted during one of the initial PlayStation Meetings, but only in cinematic trailer form. Considering the game was still early in development, it's more than reasonable we've yet to see gameplay, but that doesn't mean we don't want it. Lucky us, several screenshots featuring gameplay have been made available today. Score!
What I notice first is the tight field of view, as if players are just inches behind The Order: 1886's protagonist. It reminds me of The Evil Within, quite honestly, which uses the tight third-person camera angle to limit the player's periphery. That makes it easier to scare the player. Is The Order capitalizing on the same thing? Do they want werewolves to sneak up on players?
Of course, it's also worth pointing out that the character models, environments and textures are all very high-quality. Still, there's a noticeable short-sighted effect going on where the player's character is much more highly detailed than object in front of them, let alone the anything in the background. Also, the environments seem fairly lackluster, which could either be attributed to a focus on realism or Ready At Dawn's want to not spoil any of the game's exciting details.
The Order: 1886 is planned for released exclusively on the PlayStation 4 during 2014, though likely later in the year. It's being developed at Ready at Dawn, developers of the popular God of War handheld side-stories, who are working with Sony Santa Monica in their move from the PSP to the PS4. Hopefully we'll get a full-on gameplay trailer in the next month or so.
