In the latest Super Smash Bros. Wii U picture of the day project director Sakurai dropped one heck of a teaser. The image shows Pikachu standing in the foreground... but who is that in the background? Why, that's Xerneas, the legendary Pokemon that graces Pokemon X's box art! Symbolizing life, Xerneas is a deer-like Fairy-type Pokemon that's exclusive to Pokemon X. The question is, does this mean the Pokemon will be joining the Super Smash Bros. Roster?
Here's Sakurai's statement related to today's newly released image:
"Pic of the day. We have absolutely nothing to announce today regarding Pokemon X and Pokemon Y. Really!"
Currently the only other Pokemon on the Super Smash Bros. next-gen roster is Pikachu, a mainstay in the franchise since the first tile was released. Since then there's always been at least a couple of other Pokemon related roster editions, from Jigglypuff to the Pokemon Trainer. Xerneas wouldn't be the first legendary in Smash, but it would still be a rather large surprise. What will Yveltal do when he finds out!?
We definitely expect more Pokemon to be added to the Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS roster in the next few months. That said, it's more likely in my mind that Xerneas will be part of a Pokemon X and Pokemon Y-themed stage or assist, rather than a full on roster addition. I don't know though, would be be a cool fighter? I'd certainly donate my Yveltal if he could get in the game!
Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS are both planned for launch in 2014 and share the same roster. Other recent editions include Sonic making a grand return, Toon Link of Wind Waker fame and Princess Peach. Who is next?
