Did you know that Pokemon X and Pokemon Y are popular games? According to sales information released by Nintendo today, Pokemon X and Pokemon Y combined for more than 4 million sales across Saturday, October 12, and Sunday, October 13. While this is Nintendo's first global launch for Pokemon, comparing initial launch sales from previous launches in Japan, North America, and Europe indicates 70% growth over Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2. It prints money.
Is that not enough perspective? How about this -- these are the total sales for the most recently released Pokemon titles from Nintendo:
- Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl - 17.63 Million
- Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire - 16.22 Million
- Pokémon Black and Pokémon White - 15.42 Million
- Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver - 12.67 Million
- Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen - 12 Million
You're reading that right. In just two days Pokemon X and Pokemon Y have sold almost a third as many copies as Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen have sold lifetime -- more than a fifth of Diamond and Pearl's sales. Plus, most outlets in Europe are closed on Sundays, which probably set sales back at least a couple of hundred thousand. What kind of monster have you created, Game Freak?
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata offered the following understatement:
"The early response to Pokémon X and Pokémon Y not only reaffirms the ongoing passion of Pokémon fans, but also indicates that an entirely new generation of gamers is eager to experience the franchise for itself."
As great as Pokemon X and Pokemon Y's sales have been, keep in mind that Grand Theft Auto V sold 17.5 million copies in its first month. While both numbers are simply incredible, Pokemon has a ways to go in order to catch up. However, it's worth noting that Pokemon is exclusive to a handheld while GTAV was released on multiple consoles.
Have you picked up your copy of Pokemon X/Pokemon Y yet?
