Pokemon X and Pokemon Y are now available on the 3DS after finding resounding commercial and critical acclaim. The hard part's over for Nintendo and Game Freak. Now it's time to follow that up with merchandising! Yes, it's time for Pokemon X and Y to come to the Trading Card Game, along with their big new gameplay features Mega Evolution and the Fairy-type.
That's right, Mega Evolution will be coming to the Pokemon TCG in the XY expansion starting February 5, 2014. As in the 3DS game itself, Mega Evolution will allow players to evolve their cards into something even more powerful, but at a cost. Here's a basic overview of the mechanic:
"Before players Mega Evolve a Pokémon like Venusaur-EX or Blastoise-EX, they must consider the situation carefully because doing so ends their turn immediately, which means they can’t attack. The risky move is worth the reward, however, because Mega Evolution Pokémon exhibit a strength that surpasses Pokémon-EX. Hard-hitting attacks and high HP totals make Mega Evolution Pokémon dominant during Pokémon TCG matches."
Mega Evolution may not arrive in the Pokemon TCG until next year, but fans won't have to wait so long for the Fairy-type to be released. Starting with the Pokemon TCG: XY - Kalos Starter Set fans will be able to pick up Fairy-type Pokemon. Expect the Kalos Starter Set to be available starting November 8, just a few short weeks away.
