Square Enix released its first Kingdom Hearts III gameplay trailer late last night and it's exactly what fans of the franchise have been waiting for. Included in the trailer is a balanced introduction to core gameplay that hearkens back to the original Kingdom Hearts, in addition to new moves, enemies and settings. That's of course all in addition to just purely looking outstanding due to its next-gen platform. Bring on Kingdom Hearts III already.
Showcased at the Japanese convention D23 Expo, this Kingdom Hearts III trailer features Sora exploring what appears to be a Disney World-themed setting. He starts out fighting shadows and bandits and moves on to battle the Rock Titan enemy from Hercules while aboard a Disney World train covered in lights. It's such a ridiculous combination, but Kingdom Hearts III pulls it off without a hitch. Welcome back, Kingdom Hearts.
It's great to see that Kingdom Hearts III will be retaining that sort of ridiculous creative freedom that made it the epic it is today. Seriously, a bunch of JRPG characters battling Disney villains with swords that are keys, against a generic evil enemy name the "Heartless?" It'd all be too much if it didn't just work. It's such a random setting and world that it works perfectly for a video game. Who knows where Square Enix and Disney's imagination will go next.
Kingdom Hearts III currently has no planned release window, though rumors say it could be as late as 2015. The title is planned for release across both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, a first for the franchise. Best not to build your anticipation too high just yet. Just take in the trailer and be pleased the game's in development. Plus, in the meant time we have the recently released Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX and newly announced Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX.
