Frictional Games may love torturing their fans, but in a surprisingly considerate move they've decided to skip any more live-action trailers and jump straight to a gameplay trailer. Yes, this is our first look at SOMA's in-game action, err, terror is more appropriate. With an updated version of their Amnesia engine, Frictional is now able to bring their horror to life in ways we're not prepared for. I'm already terrified.
SOMA is, officially now, a first-person sci-fi horror game. Please note that the trailer below is not an actual level within the game. Rather, much like Amensia's initial trailers, the content featured in the trailer is from a custom level designed specifically to convey the look and feel of SOMA. It's an introduction without spoiling any of the actual game, which it actually an incredibly respective in our industry of spoiler trailers.
What's immediately surprising to me is just how hard sci-fi SOMA is straight out of the gate. Well, that and how straight horror it is out the gate, but that's less surprising to me. The sci-fi is, I mean robots, brain implants, murderous machines and then giant mysterious tunnels of machinery built around normal looking buildings -- it's startingly. Amnesia was close relatable in a lot of ways, since it kept the mystic aspects of it at arms length, but SOMA... welcome to sci-fi hell.
Unfortunately SOMA won't be arriving any time soon, as it's planned for release in 2015 (argh!), but at least that gives us plenty of time to prepare ourselves. Better news is that SOMA will be coming to both PC and PlayStation 4! I'd recommend heading over to Frictional's blog and reading all of their introduction to SOMA, it's a great read.
