Consider Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl an experiment. The adoption of a true story mode featuring five pre-made characters vs. a very thin story featuring 100% customizable crew is a stark deviation from the norm. Both modes are available in the game, but franchise fans will absolutely boot up the game and wonder what's meant to be the true Millennium Girl experience. The answer is both.
What Millennium Girl does is provide new perspective to the franchise which over the past few iterations of the game has settled into a sort of niche lull. That's not to say the quality of the experience has gone down, quite the opposite actually, but what the series needed was fresh air. The game's story mode provides a gateway into experiencing all the excellent parts of Etrian Odyssey that fans so love and adore. It's all still there, only now we have a part of friendly faces to guide us along the way.
Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl is now available on the 3DS. Yup, make sure to turn on your 3DS and check out Nintendo's eShop right now, if it behooves you. If cartography is your game, or you've always been interested in Etrian Oydssey but always felt it was too hard to get into, Millennium Girl is your answer.
