Why is Left mouse on the right side of the controller, and Right mouse on the left? Also, as tendo said where's the standard 4 primary buttons? Having them in a top/bottom-left/right configuration around the middle is totally not standard and I can't really see it working too well.

This controller disturbs me. I don't get why Valve is trying to reinvent something that works. I mean, the two track pads are neat but getting rid of a standard layout for your primary buttons, and swapping left/right mouse clicks to be the opposite? what in bloody hell.
The controller was designed to be ambidextrous so left handed people can finally game comfortably right out of the box without spending extra on modifications.

Also like I said in my post the ABXY buttons are not meant to be face buttons, even the second picture with portal delegates those buttons to less important actions.

If these trackpads are more accurate than thumsticks, then this controller could be revolutionary. But the lack of the standard diamond-shaped A B X Y buttons is very off putting.

Honestly, this looks more like a potential natural evolution of a controller than the stuff we get from Sony. Microsoft seems to be going in this direction but Valve decided to do it all right at once. I have no idea if I will like using this controller, but with all change, you just have to get used to it. I definetely want to give this one a try, it looks awesome.

Dunno about this. The trackpads are fine, the shoulder and bumper buttons are fine...It's three things really that worry me:

1 - The 'face' buttons being at the inner corners of the controller. There is the slight possibility of accidentally hitting them (not huge, but still there).

2 - It's very alien. It will take a lot of getting used to, since current controllers have all four of those buttons on the right side of the controller where the right track pad is.

3 - Touchpad. I know everyone is doing these, and it does definitely make porting such games to and from PC and console (also mobile) much simpler, but unless this controller becomes the industry standard, I don't see it being used all that much.

BTW: I'm not sure if it's clear to some other people, but that's a 'HD screen', not just a regular touchpad people. Notice how the top image has a custom graphic, and the bottom has a 'powered off' appearance (blank screen). Again, this makes for greater compatibility between say the Wii U, which has a video touch screen in the center, and the Vita, as well as IOS/Android games.

It might have been mentioned and I didn't see, but does this controller both X-Input and D-Input? X-Input better be supported (seems likely), but D-input is nice too, for some older games that don't play nice with X-input controllers.

tekmosis - Not sure why you find the placement odd....The left mouse button is on the right side of the controller because that's pretty standard....The main action for a game (IE: Shooting) is usually on the right side of the controller (shoulder trigger). The main action (again, shooting for example) is left mouse button on M+KB. The controller mapping for those actions is thus, not strange in the slightest but pretty standard. It's how console controllers do it.

A trackpad for aiming/camera movement sounds good to me, its using one for movement that I can't quite wrap my head around. Sliding your thumb around the gamepad just sounds awkward.

Haven't had buttons on the underside of a controller since the N64, so thats interesting.

Here's what developers had to say after trying the controller out for themselves. When it comes to accuracy, it seems like this controller is between console dual joysticks and an actual mouse.

Love the way this looks. Love that they are trying something totally new. Triggers and shoulder buttons + trackpads is interesting. However, those middle buttons look really awkward to me and I think the "HD" touchscreen is an unneeded expense on the device.

I wonder if console gamers would be able to adapt to this more easily than a PC gamer already used to KB + Mouse. I've never been able to recreate the feel and control of a KB/M on any controller and I doubt I can do it on the SteamController, but that's probably because I just can't finely control my thumb as well as I can my wrist/arm.

Looks weird...Valve needs more conceptual and analytical thinking before they create a shit like this.

So because it "looks weird" you believed they failed in designing a controller that defies pretty much everything we expect from a conventional controller? That's the definition of a "concept".

I honestly appreciate the fact that it's so unique, but like many have stated, my final judgement will be reserved when I actually have one in my hand and play with it myself. All the features sound great in theory (well, I'm still trying to grasp the face buttons being moved around) but only time will tell how well this will work out.

It's unfair to criticize it immediately just because it's different.

This looks awesome, but at the same time I'm afraid to look straight at the track pads. D:
