One thing we know about The Evil Within is that nobody really knows anything about what's going on. Detective Sebastian reports to the site of a mass murder at an asylum and is ambushed by a man with a knife, but from there things get wild. Today Bethesda and Tango Gameworks released a twelve-minute gameplay trailer showing what begins after Sebastian is knocked unconscious at the Asylum. Basically, things get worse.
It starts with an ogre of a man, who is also a butcher, chasing after Sebastian with a Chainsaw through dark hallways filled with spinning blades and many small things that will trip people. From there we see a bit of combat as Sebastian explored the "Perth House," a small cabin in the woods filled with some zombie-like monsters. From there, well, things get wild.
The 12-minute trailer covers the breadth of what the press were shown earlier this year at E3. Well, except for the fact that the trailer seems to be filled with jump cuts to rush through the experience, focusing on moments of high terror and dropping the in-between quiet moments when fear really seeps in. As a result the trailer loses a lot of the intensity I remember experiencing through atmosphere, but still does a good job introducing gamers to the confusing and malevolent setting in The Evil Within.
The Evil Within will be launching in 2014 for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC. Shinji Mikami has something real messed up for us here.
