Set in the world of Legacy of Kain, but related only in name and setting, Nosgoth aims to return the franchise to prominence as a free-to-play multiplayer title. Nosgoth, set after the events of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, takes place during an undetailed war between vampire and human where the only objective is killing the other side. Humans have ranged weapons, vampires have tooth and claw; who will you side with?
A third-person action game, Nosgoth is as rumors have confirmed months ago. It's a battle arena, a free-to-play multiplayer game that apes the Legacy of Kain name to draw in initial attention. There's no continuation of the storyline here, and in fact the developers at Psyonix come right out and say they have no narrative plan here. In fact, players will inevitably decide who wins the vampire/human war taking place in game. Thematically, that has to be a big disappointment to Legacy of Kain fans, so it looks like Nosgoth will have to stand on its gameplay.
Players on the human side will battle with various ranged weaponry, or at least so it seems from the gameplay shown in Nosgoth's initial announcement trailer. Crossbows, bows and arrows, flamethrowers and also some type of equippable healing grenade. Meanwhile, vampires will be able to run, climb walls, or even fly depending on the player's chosen class. It's slightly reminiscent of Aliens multiplayer gameplay to me, but only initially. From there it's more akin to Warhammer: Wrath of Heroes, a class-based battle arena style game.
Nosgoth will be launching a closed beta soon and invites gamers to register for a chance to try the game out. As for official launch, well, that's somewhere further down the line when the game proves ready. For now, Nosgoth is only announced for PC, but we'll see if the game ends up coming to consoles too.
