The third Final Fantasy XIII title won't be released until February of next year, but that won't stop Square Enix from teasing a bit of what we can expect. Today the publisher released the opening cinematic for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and the best I can say is if you've enjoyed the other two Final Fantasy XIII games then this is right in line. That is to say, it's all sorts of crazy and very Japanese.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII begins with not only the reintroduction of Lightning herself, but also her brother-in-law Snow. At first it might seem like there's an odd amount of sexual tension, but then you've got to remember this is a JRPG and there's usually sexual tension between every character. Anyways, it's the end of the world, apparently, and Lightning is capturing people's souls to "save" them. Snow just happens to be at the top of her list.
Those more familiar with the storyline of Final Fantasy XIII and its sequel may know more about the impending end of the world, or why Snow has lived for so long, or who the chaos girl who breaks Lightning's sword is, or why Hope is back and acting as Lightning's operations manager through an earpiece. Who am I kidding, no one in their right mind should be able to make sense of all this ridiculousness.
Check out the trailer, as hopefully it'll hold fans over until February when Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Well, this trailer and the dozens of trailers for oddball preorder items and Lightning costumes.
