Valiant Hearts: The Great War has been officially announced. This comes after a leaked image for Ubisoft's Digital Days showed the game's logo. How were we to tell that Valiant Hearts would in fact be a puzzle adventure from Rayman Legends developer Ubisoft Montpellier. More than that, it's a puzzle adventure telling the story of World War I from the vantage of five characters from five different countries. That's a hell of a shift in tone.
Our five protagonists will be united in a single goal -- reuniting a German soldier with his lost love, guided by a German dog separated from its owner during an artillery strike. Obviously Valiant Hearts will dive head first into potential controversy, but they do so with valiant hearts:
"The art of Valiant Hearts tackles the tragedy of the war with an almost unassuming innocence. Characters are drawn as caricatures of each nation, and the battlefields are stylized exaggerations of their real-world counterparts. And yet, Valiant Hearts is utterly serious about its subject. The small team of developers at Montpellier (a group of ten) want a younger generation to experience a part of history that’s fast approaching its 100-year anniversary."
Gameplay in Valiant Hearts appears to be that of a 2D adventure game where players explore the environment searching for solutions to various obstacles. Overcoming barbed wire, throwing grenades and petting the dog are just a few examples of gameplay.
Valiant Hearts: The Great War is slated to launch on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in 2014, developed by a 10-person team at Ubisoft Montpellier. Expect some heavy, something potentially painfully beautiful. Add another one to the list of most anticipated games in 2014.
