Today marked the opening of Konami's latest studio expansion. Introducing Konami Los Angeles, a development studio said to be working on a variety of projects, but for the near future only Metal Gear Solid. Specifically they'll be working on Metal Gear Solid V, whether that be the Ground Zeroes prequel, The Phantom Pain itself or whatever else Kojima has up his sleeves.
Hideo Kojima, Director of Kojima Productions, states why Konami is moving to Los Angeles:
"As gaming takes the world stage as one of the greatest forms of entertainment, it's only natural for us to expand our operations across the globe. And since Los Angeles is ground zero for the best studios, facilities and world-class talent, we are leaning on of these local resources to build an incredible team to create gaming experiences that are just as compelling as any film or television show."
Metal Gear Solid Rising: Revengeance has shown how there's more of the Metal Gear universe to be explored (and make a profit from). Considering Kojima is only one man and has been less enthusiastic about continuing the franchise year after year, it makes sense to diversify the brand -- add some new ideas. Plus, having a foothold in the United States can be an important tool for Japanese developers these days.
What's next for Konami Los Angeles? Likely months and months of hiring, training, concepting, prototyping and helping out the bigger studios in Japan in every way they can. Hopefully we can expect big things in the future!
