Well, the PlayStation is less than three months away from release, but there's never a bad time to offer alternate colorings of current-gen hardware, right? Sony apparently agrees, because they'll be launching an exclusive Azurite Blue PlayStation 3 this October. The console will only be available at GameStop stores, which is a bit of a drag, but better that than nothing, right?
Sony didn't announce any hardware details for the console, as the announcement was made in a simple tweet. Odds are they'll get around to it sooner or later. Considering that Sony is also going to be selling a Grand Theft Auto V bundle featuring the game and a 500GB system for $270, it makes you wonder what's being packaged in. To be fair, PlayStation 3 pricing is all over the place, so odds are the Azurite Blue will be a standard PS3 with either a 250 or 500GB hard drive in it and no bundled games.
Azurite Blue is a great color, but I think as far as consoles go it's a bit gaudy for my tastes. It would stand out like a sore thumb among all my black gaming platforms, from the Wii U to the upcoming PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Still... special edition... hmm. And with great PlayStation 3 games like Beyond, Gran Turismo 6 and tons more coming out this year now's probably the best time to own a PlayStation 3.
Update: We can now confirm that the Azurite Blue PlayStation 3 is indeed a 250GB model. It comes with an exclusive Azurite Blue DualShock controller, but no other games or exclusive items are bundled with the console. It will cost $249.99 and is scheduled to ship October 8, exclusively from GameStop
