Good news, everybody! Killer Instinct will be available when the Xbox One launches and will cost absolutely nothing! Bad news, everybody. Free-to-play Killer Instinct will only include a single character for you to play. This is why free-to-play is a four letter word. Expect to get nickel and dimed if you're interested in picking up Killer Instinct, everyone.
It's not so bad to start out with. If you're not sure how into Killer Instinct you'll be you can download it for free to try out. From there, if you're just a bit interested, you can download any character for $4.99. If you like the game, skip buying individual characters and purchase the $20 "Combo Breaker Pack" which includes all initial 6 characters and the first two DLC characters. Like Killer Instinct more than a lot? There's a $40 "Ultra Edition" which includes all 8 characters, character accessories, character costumes, and the original Killer Instinct arcade game. Starting to see how things are getting out of hand?
Despite being released as free-to-play, Killer Instinct will be selling characters, character accessories, and character costumes. Even if you buy these value bundles, odds are there will be DLC and a lot of it very soon. Investing yourself in Killer Instinct is like stating you've got an open wallet policy and Double Helix/Microsoft can dive in whenever they get around to it. I want a single game to buy. I want to know I'm fighting against people who bought the same game, not someone who can only afford half the game I got. Ah, whatever. Modern gaming business is gross.
Hey though, don't even worry about it. Look, a bunch of cool screenshots of Chief Thunder!
Killer Instinct will launch with the Xbox One as an exclusive in November.
