Xbox One launch title Ryse has up until now been considered a very borderline action game. Much of the gameplay we've seen has been in large part quick time events. Today that changes as Microsoft and Crytek debuted Ryze's "Gladiator Mode" via trailer at gamescom, along with further details on combat in-game. Needless to say, if you weren't impressed before, it's worth being so now.
Gladiator Mode offers a wave-based cooperative multiplayer mode where players fight in the Mecca of all arenas -- the Coliseum. Only this Coliseum is a bit different than the classic one. For instance, it's floor can dynamically change into a unique challenges. While it's hard to tell how diverse the environments can be, just the visuals of the shift are astounding.
Yet it would mean nothing if the gameplay wasn't something a bit more complicated than quick time events. Luckily, according to newly revealed details, Ryse can now be confirmed 100% to be a tried and true action game. Players will use their shields and spears in real-time combat against a horde of enemy AI. Timing still plays a key role in hand-to-hand combat, but it's all in your control. There will still be epic finishing executions though. Depending on the type of execution a player completes they can gain increased XP, HP, damage, or even perform an area of effect attack afterwards.
Basically, Ryse is starting to look more and more like a game rather than a tech demo -- an outstandingly visually impressive tech demo, albeit. Now it's got a multiplayer mode that could last for a very long time. Oh, did I mention it has a map editor and a community system for trying out other people's maps? Yeah, tons of content. Ryse just keeps getting better and better.
Seriously though, watch this trailer and check out the Coliseum's floor. It blows my mind every time I see it.
