With Grand Theft Auto V Rockstar is stepping up their multiplayer experience. Grand Theft Auto Online will offer a persistent and evolving world for players to explore and play in. We're talking 16 players, complete freedom to roam Grand Theft Auto V's geography and partake in any of its exciting gameplay. Grand Theft Auto Online will come free with every purchase of Grand Theft Auto V.
These are just a few of the features Rockstar explained would be included in Grand Theft Auto Online:
"Players can invest in their character through customizing their appearance, improving their stats, owning customized vehicles, purchasing personal property, and taking part in missions, jobs and activities to earn reputation and cash to open up new opportunities to rise through the criminal ranks. The world of Grand Theft Auto Online will constantly grow and change as new content is added, creating the first ever persistent and dynamic Grand Theft Auto game world."
According to Rockstar players are free to work cooperatively to complete structured missions, roam completely free, or partake in competitive events ranked against the entire community. I suppose we have to assume each world will be unique to the host player? I doubt we're adding dedicated servers consider Grand Theft Auto V is a console first release.
It's impossible not to be excited about the possibilities inherent to 16 players wandering around the complete Grand Theft Auto V world. Cooperative open world games have created some of my more cherished online experiences -- I'm looking at you, Crackdown 2!
Grand Theft Auto V will launch on September 17, but it looks like Grand Theft Auto Online will be delayed somewhat to October 1. Rockstar probably doesn't want their servers utterly ravaged on launch day, so this should give them some time to prepare.
