Regardless of subscription rates, World of Warcraft will continue to plow on as one of the most popular gaming franchises of the modern era. Today reveals one of Blizzard's next steps into the future, as they trademark the term, "The Dark Below." Those very familiar with Warcraft lore may recognize the term from the game's RPG Monster Manual. Could we be looking at the next MMO expansion?
According to Blizzard's Monster Manual for World of Warcraft, "The Dark Below" is described as the following:
"The Dark Below is a place inhabited by demons, devils and infernal creatures, from where some sorcerers take their power directly and sometimes have a patron beast to foster their magic."
Speculation drives the thought that The Dark Below is somehow related to The Twisting Nether, on account of its association with demons, devil and such. The other side believes it may be referencing something below the surface of the planet, rather than out in space like the Nether.
What we really should be speculating on is whether The Dark Below is actually a World of Warcraft expansion or something else entirely. After all, a small reference in a Monster Manual isn't exactly the best source material to build an expansion off of. Rather, it may be the title of some smaller side-project, like another RPG rules book or a novel of some sort.
Perhaps we'll find out during Blizzard's BlizzCon, which will begin November 8.
