I think this is a good move and despite the loss of subscribers i think this will help the playerbase more in the long run, making it more connected community wise.

People have been asking for server mergers for years. There are a number of servers that have populations around 1000 total. In BC they spammed a ton of new servers. A number of which never got stable populations and remained dead.

Seems like it's about time. You write you suspect it may be server intensive? Some how I speculate that is unlikely. If I were in their place I would code it so that multiple realms are on one server but when you log in it makes you think you're seperate by giving you a name like "name - Chromaggus" (I think thats a low pop realm as a quick example).

Thats what I'd do anyways. Doing several thousand server transfers with the realm suffix to prevent name conflicts is a relatively simple way to cut longer term operating costs while still superfically appearing to be healthy.

They already have the groundwork in place, they are building on CRZ. The most intensive part on the servers has already been tested through CRZ. All this "Connected Realms" is just connecting other things such as the auction house etc. I personally think its too late and this won't save the mass decline in players.

Just to quote on this, its not as easy as "Just code it like this". Some things like your default 16 slot bag cannot be changed because of how the underlying code would effect the game (According to blue posts on the issue). By having everything on 1 server that means when the server goes down or crashes, everything on the connected realm goes down. I doubt many people would like that over what we currently have.

I just don't buy into this at all, its far too late in the game for this in my opinion. Its not going to bring players back. The way they advertised a 50% off moving realm the week before announcing this was pretty scummy of the company. The indirect pay to win aspect the game is going to have (Buying Lesser Charms for real money) is only going to fluctuate and expand onto other things. I personally think they should have a number squish, work out balance in PvP (Or at least bring it back to WOTLK style) and try to fix what is wrong with the game and what is driving people away. Adding extras like connected realms in fairness is something that should have been seen as needed greatly since mid-late TBC and not a "Big new announcement" when the games on its deathbed.

Just my opinion on this and how the game has been in general recently.

Can you really do that now? When did they implement that?

I don't think this tactic is being used to bring back players or attract new players (that is going to be done with the next expansion, assuming it isn't too late by now). Connected Realms is being done to pacify the current playerbase (every content patch in every expansion is for this purpose, really).

It's a really good move in my opinion, because it's actually useful, unlike CRZ.

Currently, in my realm we have a completely barren Auction House. The little stuff we find on there are low level greens and such, all horrendously over priced. Being able to merge with all the other realms to make one big AH will be a huge help for the low population servers.

Additionally, LFR is almost useless in my realm/battlegroup, since my realm is very low population and the other realms in the group are mostly RP servers. Queue times for older raids can reach over 2 hours, even as a tank or healer.
