Microsoft's really trying to keep the temperature hot with its "Games With Gold" program after Assassin's Creed II was added for the second half of July. August's additions may be even better: Crackdown will be available for free to Xbox Live Gold members starting August 1, then Dead Rising 2 along with Dead Rising 2: Case Zero on August 16. Altogether it's about $30 in value, which is comparable to July.
For those unaware, July market the first real month of the "Games With Gold" program, which provides two free games to Xbox Live Gold members every 15 days or so. It started with Defense Grid: The Awakening, which brought about a bit of controversy consider the high expectations gamers had for the program. Assassin's Creed II followed Defense Grid up and had a much more positive reception, though how many gamers actually downloaded and played the old game is questionable.
Naturally, the comparisons to PlayStation Plus will continue, and in that regard the service still has a lot to prove. For the time being however, Games With Gold seems to know what's it's doing -- providing great games for its subscribers to enjoy.
