Do you like video games? Do you like charity? Do you like marathons where people play video games in support of charity? Then I have great news for you! Today marks the beginning of "Summer Games Done Fast 2013," run by the Speed Demos Archive community. We're talking over 80 games across 5 days and it all starts... right now!
Yes, the Summer Games Done Quick 2013 event has just begun with today's first game, Okami HD. Other games planned for today include:
- Donkey Kong Country Returns by spikevegeta
- Metal Gear Solid by Slade
- Resident Evil: Code Veronica X HD by Carcinogen
- Amnesia: The Dark Descent by AdamAK
- Hotline Miami by Duke Bilgewater
- Luigi's Mansion b y bonesaw577
- Catechumen by PEACHES_
- Quest 64 by PEACHES_ and KirkQ
Keep in mind that each game run during Summer Games Done Quick is run live by a player who flew out just for the event. Also, they're not just any players, they're preeminent speedrunners of the game they're playing. Some currently hold the world record for speedrunning their respective game, others will be fighting for the world record, but mostly they'll all be practicing safe, "marathon strategies." Trust me, it's still spectacular to watch.
If you need some perspective, the Speed Demo Archive does two of these events per year. The Summer Games Done Quick event and the Awesome Games Done Quick event in January. Last year's summer event had 40 participants and raised $45,000. This year's January event? Over 100 participants helped raise $448,000. That's not a typo. Things are getting out of hand.
Check out the event's great trailer below, or jump on over to the main Summer Games Done Quick website for the stream, donation information and schedule. Half an hour in and already $2000 raised! Also, check out this great NeoGAF thread for everything you need to know about the stream.
