I'm of the opinion that remakes are by and large crimes against humanity. Criminal insults against our much historied and glorious gaming past. However, if you're going to remake a classic title, there's one proper way to do it and that's to start completely over from scratch and create something as much new as it is old. Such is the case with Sega's remake of Disney's Castle of Illusion, or at least so it seems from this latest behind the scenes trailer.
Disney's Castle of Illusion is one of those outstanding 2D platformers that many young gamers grew up with. It was one of those types of games that despite a growing collection would always be worth going back to and playing through again. The type of game that hurts a little to see remade, rather than just ported/emulated on newer platforms.
What Sega's team is doing with Castle of Illusion, however, seems intriguing. A complete rebuild of the game from the ground up to the point where the setting and sounds feel familiar, but altogether the game is an entirely new experience. Will it be as unique and inspired of the classic? We'll have to see at release, but at least it will stand on its own as opposed to aping entirely off the classic title.
Disney's Castle of Illusion will be released later this summer on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC via digital release. Hopefully we'll have some more specific release information soon.
